Fury At Plans To Change Planning Rules!Wednesday 24th March, 2010The Government are planning to change planning laws for rental properties that are occupied by 3 or more sharers from next month. This has caused outrage for RLA members and Landlords as it would mean that if you currently let a property with 3 or more sharers you will require planning permission. The Tory shadow housing minister has backed Landlords and the RLA saying: "We are concerned that this is a state sledgehammer to crack a nut. Labour have already kicked the housing market by imposing the red tape of Home Information Packs, Now they want to cripple the fragile Buy to Let market with even more regulation. Tenants will lose out, as these new costs will reduce the supply of housing and drive up rents. At a time when the housing market is so vulnerable, this is kicking the Buy to Let market when it is down on its knees" If you have an existing shared house or flat which you let to a single person or a family you will lose the right – once they have moved out – to let it again to sharers WITHOUT OBTAINING PLANNING PERMISSION. The RLA is now considering further action. Options are limited because the measure is a Statutory Instrument which does not get debated in Parliament and will come into effect on April 6th.
