Register For Landlords & Letting Agents Scrapped

Monday 28th June, 2010

Housing Minister Grant Shapps has announced that the Government have decided not to go ahead with the national reister for Letting Agents and Landlords, he told  the House of Commons that the register, proposed in a report almost two years ago by York academic Julie Rugg, would not go ahead. Earlier in the week, he had suggested that a national register could well be ‘another HIPs' and would not encourage further investment in the private rented sector.

‘The Government has no plans to create any burdensome red tape and bureaucracy, so landlords are able to continue providing a service to tenants,' said Shapps. His decision has been widely welcomed by the industry.

The decision not to implement the rules, which were more than a year in the making, comes soon after the Department for Communities and Local Government scrapped the home information packs (Hips) and density targets, one of the policies blamed for garden-grabbing.

The Government will be depending on local councils to use the powers already at their disposal to tackle rogue landlords who fail to provide good quality accommodation.
